Schumer, Gillibrand Push Legislation to Name Rochester Post Office in Honor of Lance Corporal Brian Schrahmm

May 6, 2009

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten
Gillibrand announced today they are pushing for passage of legislation to have
the United States Post Office in Rochester, NY designated as “Brian K.
Schramm Post Office Building” in honor of Lance
Cpl. Brian Schramm, a native of Greece in Monroe County. The
legislation, H.R. 1595 was introduced in the House of Representatives by
Congressman Chris Lee and passed on April 28, 2009

To encourage passage of the bill in the Senate, Senators
Schumer and Gillibrand wrote a letter to Chairman Carper and Ranking Member
McCain of the Subcommittee on Federal
Financial Management urging them to consider passage of the bill,
the next critical step in moving the legislation forward.

“Lance Cpl.Brian
Schramm was a model citizen who showed incredible strength, leadership and
courage during his time with the U.S. Marine Corps,” said Schumer. ‘Naming the
Rochester Post Office is a fitting tribute to an exemplary public servant who
dedicated his life to his community and his country.”

“Lance Cpl. Brian Schramm lived his life with integrity,
compassion and a commitment to what is right,” said Senator Gillibrand. “I
am honored to pay tribute to him as a great public servant who made the
ultimate sacrifice for his country on behalf of his community. By naming Lance
Cpl. Brian Schramm’s local post office after him, we can continue to honor
his service every day.”

Lance Cpl. Brian Schramm
was born in the Monroe County community of Greece, New York. After graduating
from Greece Olympia High School, Lance Cpl. Schramm joined the U.S. Marine
Corps.  While on a second tour of duty in Iraq, he lost his life during an
enemy attack on October 15, 2004 in Babil province, Iraq.

To pay tribute to the
life of Lance Cpl. Brian Schramm, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand sent a letter
to the Subcommittee on Federal
Financial Management urging them to pass legislation to rename the United
States Post Office in Rochester in his honor.

Schumer and Gillibrand wrote in their letter, “Lance Cpl.
Brian Schramm was an exemplary American who made the ultimate sacrifice for our
country.  Passage of this bill by the Senate would be a fitting tribute to
Brian’s heroic service.”

Dear Chairman Carper and Ranking Member McCain:

We write in
support of H.R. 1595, a bill to designate the United States Postal Service
facility located at 3245 Latta Road in Rochester, New York, as the “Brian
K. Schramm Post Office Building,” and to encourage its consideration in the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management.

Lance Cpl. Brian Schramm
was born in the Monroe County community of Greece, New York. After graduating
from Greece Olympia High School, Lance Cpl. Schramm followed his childhood
dream and joined the U.S. Marine Corps.  While on a second tour of duty in
Iraq, he lost his life during an enemy attack on October 15, 2004 in Babil
province, Iraq.  He was 22 years old.

A born leader, one of
Lance Cpl. Schramm’s future goals was a career in law enforcement. Brian is
remembered by his family and community as a tenacious, honest and loyal young
man, and as a testament to his contribution to both his hometown and his
country, a scholarship has been set up in his honor. The scholarship is
available to Greece Olympia students who demonstrate a solid work ethic,
community spirit, and college potential.

Lance Cpl. Brian Schramm was an exemplary American who made
the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  H.R. 1595 was passed by the House
of Representatives on April 28, 2009.  Passage by the Senate would
similarly be a fitting tribute to Brian’s heroic service. Thank you for your
consideration of this legislation.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer
