Aug 12, 2014

Washington, D.C.- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Tom Reed today announced President Barack Obama has signed legislation to name the U.S. Post Office in Tyrone the “Specialist Christopher Scott Post Office Building.” Specialist Christopher Scott was killed on September 3, 2011, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, at the age of 21 while serving in the United States Army. The legislation passed the House on July 14, 2014, and received final Congressional passage in the Senate on August 1, 2014.

“Specialist Scott is a true hometown hero who will always remain in the hearts of his loved ones and the Finger Lakes community,” Senator Gillibrand said. “He answered the highest call and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, serving with bravery, honor and integrity. Designating the Tyrone Post Office in his name will honor his legacy in the community he loved for all to remember.”

“A young member of such a close knit community, Specialist Scott gave the ultimate sacrifice for us and for our country at just 21 years old. Specialist Scott was the true definition of patriotism and I am honored to be a part of recognizing him at home where we can preserve Specialist Scott’s legacy as one of this country’s brave heroes,” Reed said. “Having this bill signed into law means Specialist Scott’s family, friends and community will forever be reminded of how he answered the highest call.”

“We are so grateful for what has been done for Chris and his memory. We look forward to sharing this honor with our community, ‎” said the family of Specialist Scott.

Spc. Scott graduated from Dundee Central School in 2009 and began service in the Army. Scott was assigned to units including the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, and the 101st Sustainment Brigade.

While serving in the Army, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. Posthumously, Specialist Scott was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.
