Schumer, Gillibrand Announce Over $30k for the City of Troy, Support for Critical Law Enforcement Initiatives

Sep 3, 2013

Today, U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Department of Justice has awarded $31,630 to the City of Troy under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.  The City of Troy will use federal funding to deploy patrol officers in uniform and plain clothes for additional investigative duties in areas experiencing enhanced criminal activity. With these adequate resources, Troy police can boost patrol of high crime areas and investigate emergent criminal activity at specific locales.

“Our local heroes, who put themselves in harm’s way in order to keep our communities safe, deserve our support,” said Senator Schumer. “I am pleased to announce that the City of Troy will be receiving federal funding to support police initiatives that keep officers on the street and lower crime in the area.”

“This is an important investment to help keep Troy families safe,” Senator Gillibrand said. “As law enforcement agencies across the state are facing budget cuts during these tough economic times, the funding from this program helps create and implement innovative ways to fight and prevent crime, keeping our communities safe. This program is a cornerstone in crime-fighting initiatives in our criminal justice system.”

“The City of Troy is especially pleased to continue its partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice under the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program,” said City of Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia. “Through criminal analysis, neighborhood groups and community police, the grant money will allow us to deploy directed patrols both in high visibility uniformed police and in covert plain clothes police details where they are needed most — putting additional police officers on the streets to bring neighborhood-focused criminal activity under control and improve the quality of live. We thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for aiding in our efforts to keep all communities safe.”

The Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program furthers the Department’s mission by providing States and units of local government with tools needed to meet the challenges associated with crime and bringing criminals to justice. Specifically, this program provides funds to state and local initiatives for technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice.  This program predominantly funds police overtime and the purchasing of new equipment, to provide for a safer community through increased officer presence and capabilities.
