Schumer, Gillibrand Announce Over $9 Million In Department of Education Funding To Promote Student Readiness For Post-Secondary Programs In New York State

May 25, 2017

Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $9,045,777 in grants for New York state post-secondary education programs. The funding was allocated through the Department of Education’s Upward Bound program. Specifically, the federal funding will be used to bring more access and support services to college-readiness programs in New York City, Long Island, Capital Region, Central New York, Western New York, Southern Tier, Rochester Finger Lakes, and the Hudson Valley.

“If we are serious about remaining globally competitive, we must make sure all students are receiving, a world-class education. The funding provided by the Upward Bound Program will help New York’s students pursue new educational opportunities and improve readiness for post-secondary programs. This funding will have a significant impact on New York’s students attaining an education at colleges across the state,” said Senator Schumer.

“In order for New York to maintain our competitiveness in the 21st century global economy and keep our skilled workforce in the region, we must prepare our students with the education they need to succeed,” said Senator Gillibrand. “We need to do everything we can to give our students, regardless of background or income level, opportunities to grow and excel in post-secondary education, and these federal funds will help us achieve that goal. I will continue to support educational programs that will create a new generation of innovators.”

The Upward Bound program provides fundamental college preparation support to high school students from low-income families and high-school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase secondary education completion and encourage students’ enrollment in and graduation from postsecondary education institutions. These programs provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages, in addition to tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and work-study opportunities. These programs are specially designed for students who are limited English proficient, groups that are underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless, those in foster care, or other disconnected students.
