Schumer, Gillibrand, Jeffries Announce Over $16m In Federal Sandy Funding For Permanent Repairs To Coney Island’s Edna Cohen School

Feb 10, 2015

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Congressmember Hakeem Jeffries today announced $16.2 million in federal funding to the New York City School Construction Authority for permanent work of P.S. 90 Edna Cohen School of Coney Island, as a result of Superstorm Sandy. Flooding from storm surge caused severe damage to the public school. Federal funding is being obligated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance program.

“There is no better federal investment than one that helps educate students in a safe and learning-friendly environment,” said Senator Schumer. “Coney Island’s P.S. 90 was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and these funds will help reimburse the cost of repairs to this school.”

“Superstorm Sandy left the P.S. 90 Edna Cohen School in need of major repairs,” Senator Gillibrand said. “Years have passed since Sandy’s wrath, and our communities are still recovering. This investment will help to rectify those damages to restore P.S. 90 to pre-Sandy conditions with even stronger infrastructure. I will continue to fight for critical federal assistance to rebuild our communities and make them more resistant for future storms.”

“This is a good step in the right direction. The Edna Cohen School is one of many Coney Island institutions that suffered enormous damage as a result of Superstorm Sandy. Its infrastructure was decimated, classrooms were flooded and children were left with no place to learn. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand should be commended for playing such a pivotal role in helping secure this $16.2 million relief package that will be used to rebuild this school and repair the lives of our neighbors in Coney Island,” said Congressman Jeffries.

The FEMA award provides $16,217,235 to fund the following permanent repairs to the Edna Cohen School: replacement of damaged electrical equipment, feeders, branch wiring, wiring devices, and accessories; replacement of service distribution equipment, which includes one new service rated switch to feed the fire alarm system, egress lighting and exit signs; replacement of power distribution switchboard; replacement of the water damaged lighting and appliances to panel boards; replacement of boilers, burners and associated equipment and devices; replacement of fire alarm system; replacement of sump pumps, gas service and gas meter rigs, gas pressure booster pump, and gas hot water heater and accessories; replacement of architectural finishes such as doors, tile, fixtures and roof tiles.
