Oct 29, 2014

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced a grant of $1,973,000 and a loan of $1,873,000 for the Town of Wawarsing in Ulster County. The federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program and will be used to restore water storage tanks, replace the treatment facility at the 400,000 gallon tank, and replace other aged and undersized water mains that are not up to New York State’s sanitary code standards.

“Having a state-of-the-art waste-water system is critical to public health and the environment,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal investment will have a positive impact on the lives of many residents and businesses in the Town of Wawarsing. Having an improved sewer system will help Warwarsing attract more residents, businesses, and economic development opportunities to the area.”

“This is a much needed investment for the Town of Wawarsing,” Senator Gillibrand said. “Upgrading water infrastructure is an effective way to support local businesses and attract new jobs. This critical funding will help protect the health and quality of life of residents by delivering clean water to more local families.”

USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.
