Gillibrand Announces $104.6 Million In Aid For New York City To Support Asylum Seekers

Jun 7, 2023

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced $104.6 million in aid for New York City to support asylum seekers. This critical federal funding is allocated through FEMA’s new Shelter Services Program.

“New York City has a unique set of demands and challenges in supporting the asylum seekers who have arrived in our city. Democrats in Congress have heeded the call to support New York City, and I am proud to announce an additional $104 million in funding to continue this critical work of treating every person in our state with the dignity and care they deserve,” said Senator Gillibrand. “New York City is receiving the largest share to date of this federal funding, which I helped secure in last year’s funding package. I will continue to work hard to support asylum seekers, pass comprehensive immigration reform, ease barriers to work authorization, improve the efficiency of immigration courts, and ensure access to legal services. New York has a rich history of welcoming migrants and this funding will help our local leaders treat everyone in our state humanely.”
