With the Holiday Season Approaching, Trump Administration Actions Are Increasing Thanksgiving Expenses For New Yorkers
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is slamming the Trump administration for rising food costs that are squeezing families and forcing New Yorkers to pay more at the grocery store this holiday season.
“As American families struggle to put food on the table this Thanksgiving, the Trump administration is spending billions on ballrooms, private jets, and foreign bailouts,” said Senator Gillibrand. “While New Yorkers face soaring prices, this administration has slashed support for working families and imposed reckless tariffs that are driving up the cost of everything from groceries to household essentials. As the administration turns its back on working people, I will keep fighting to lower costs so every family can afford to celebrate the holidays.”
Turkey costs are soaring this Thanksgiving — wholesale prices have jumped 75% since October 2024, leading to significantly higher prices at the grocery store. Over the past year, overall food prices have risen by more than 3%, and holiday staples like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are up 5.2%. President Trump’s tariffs have contributed directly to these price increases.
New research shows nearly 60% of Americans now feel “priced out” of their own kitchens, and almost half say they’re swapping out turkey at the Thanksgiving table for cheaper alternatives.
Senator Gillibrand’s statement comes as grocery giants like Walmart, Target, and Aldi scale back their Thanksgiving meal deals, shifting to cheaper products and reducing the number of items provided.
Senator Gillibrand has long championed efforts to ensure working families can afford to put food on the table. During the government shutdown, she demanded that the Trump administration stop dangerously withholding SNAP benefits from people across the country, including nearly 3 million New Yorkers. She has also introduced legislation to increase SNAP benefits and help those with high medical and housing costs qualify for the program, and she introduced separate proposals to end food deserts and combat food insecurity among older Americans.
