U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $2,808,000 in federal funding for the Griffiss International Airport located in Rome. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This federal funding will enable the airport to construct a snow removal equipment building, so it can safely and efficiently store the tools that will allow it to keep runways and taxiways clear during all months of the year.
“I am pleased to add this $2.8 million federal grant to the list of ‘arrivals’ at Griffiss International Airport,” said Senator Schumer. “The funding will help the airport enhance its safety and efficiency by allowing it to store the snow removal equipment needed to protect the airport from wintry weather conditions. For New York airports, both big and small, safety comes first.”
“This additional funding will help support safety operations at the Griffiss International Airport,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Griffiss International Airport is a vital economic anchor that businesses and travelers rely on, and this new equipment will help decrease snow delays during the winter season. I will always fight in the Senate to make sure that our airports receive the funding needed to enhance efficiency and public safety.”
This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
