Schumer, Gillibrand Announce More Than $52,000 In Anti-Crime Funding For Niagara Falls

Aug 5, 2014

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $52,293 in federal funding for anti-crime initiatives in Niagara Falls. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs and will be used to support safety initiatives to improve the Niagara Falls Police Department.

“When it comes to protecting our citizens, we need to be tough on crime and smart on prevention, and we need to make sure those who can help in a criminal investigation are comfortable coming forward with valuable information,” said Senator Schumer. “These much-needed funds will help Niagara’s police improve the way they work with and protect both witnesses and victims of crime, so the city can be a safer place for everyone.”

“This is a great investment for Niagara Falls,” Senator Gillibrand said. “By improving the Niagara Falls Police Department’s services, overall safety within our neighborhoods will be enhanced, creating a better environment for our families.”

“I am grateful to Senator Gillibrand, Senator Schumer, and our partners at the Bureau of Justice Assistance for their recognition of this critical need in Niagara Falls,” said Councilwomen Grandinetti. “Our police force will put these resources to work combating violence and crime on our city streets, and providing our officers with the equipment they need to stay as safe as possible as they protect and serve.”

The Niagara Falls Police Department will use the funding to run their Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program in Niagara Falls City schools.  Funding will also be used to continue one of their “Police Liaison” positions, purchase an additional surveillance camera to be added to the current citywide surveillance system as well as to purchase six new ballistic vests for police officers.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime. The goal of the program is to increase crucial law enforcement services as well as to improve and enhance services for victims and witnesses.
