Schumer, Gillibrand, Bishop Announce Over $1 Million in Federal Funding for Cleanup After Superstorm Sandy in the Town of Southampton

Mar 15, 2013

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Congressman Tim Bishop today announced $1,680,101 of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance funding for the Town of Southampton, which will reimburse a majority of the cost of debris removal in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

“Superstorm Sandy hammered neighborhoods on the east-end of Long Island, creating a massive cleanup effort by Town of Southampton officials and a burden for local taxpayers,” said Schumer. “This reimbursement for debris cleanup is critical in making sure that residents are not on the hook entirely for the expenses and I am pleased that this necessary funding is being provided.”

“The Town of Southampton suffered severe damage and its sanitation workers, officials and first responders worked tirelessly around the clock removing debris in the aftermath of the storm,” said Gillibrand. “This necessary reimbursement is a vital step forward as we continue to meet Long Island’s needs to recover and rebuild.”

“Southampton Town officials responded quickly and comprehensively to help the community recover after Superstorm Sandy, so I’m delighted that my office, along with our colleagues in New York’s congressional delegation, secured federal funding to promptly reimburse the town for its hard work and protect local taxpayers. A successful recovery from this devastating storm will require the continued cooperation of all levels of government,” said Congressman Tim Bishop.

“I am quite sure this is the most timely reimbursement we have ever received – a tremendous credit to our federal representatives for their fast work, and to our department heads for quickly and thoroughly coordinating volumes of documentation in order to apply for this refund,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst.

FEMA has awarded $ 1,680,101 to the Town of Southampton for debris removal after Superstorm Sandy. The funding will be provided for the use of labor and equipment hours, materials, tipping fees, and contract cost used in the removal of vegetative debris throughout the Town of Southampton during Superstorm Sandy.
