Senator Gillibrand’s Statement On Supreme Court Hobby Lobby Decision

Jun 30, 2014

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling today in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby that closely held companies with religious objections can opt out of providing contraception coverage:

“I am disappointed in today’s misguided ruling. It is shocking that in 2014 women still have to fight over access to birth control. For the first time in our history, the Supreme Court has declared that some for-profit corporations have religious beliefs and can impose those beliefs on their employees. I urge Congress to revisit the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to make it clear that businesses are not people and do not have the same rights people have. This is not only a slippery slope, it is simply wrong to allow bosses to use their personal beliefs to limit what health care services an employee has access to.”
