Statement of Senator Gillibrand Honoring Mexican-American Heritage on Cinco de Mayo

May 5, 2009

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement today in honor of Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexico’s military victory in 1862 over Napoleon III’s army, which helped the country secure its independence:

“On this “Cinco de Mayo” we not only pay tribute to the important victory in Puebla and to our longstanding friendship, but also to the contribution that Mexican-American culture has played in our own nation’s history and heritage.”

“The relationship between Mexico and the United States is one of the strongest and oldest in our nation’s history. In New York and throughout America, Mexican-Americans have added to our broad cultural tapestry and play a vital role in the health of our economy, the growth of our communities, and the diversity of our government.”
