Washington, D.C. – New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today met with Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor to talk about support for the university’s efforts to create jobs, improve energy efficiency on campus and other efforts to foster strong economic growth for the Syracuse community, and all of New York.
Senator Gillibrand also congratulated Chancellor Cantor on the Orange’s success in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the “Sweet Sixteen.” Last week Senator Gillibrand sent President Obama a Syracuse Orange t-shirt after the President announced that he liked Syracuse’s chances in the big dance.
“Syracuse has always been a jewel of higher education for New York,” Senator Gillibrand said. “Syracuse is home to world leading biomedical research and development, making advancements that will improve the lives of all New Yorkers and strengthen our economy for the long term. We need to invest in our colleges and universities to keep New York at the forefront of these industries, and train our students for the jobs of the future.”
Senator Gillibrand and Chancellor Cantor specifically discussed strengthening Syracuse’s Biomaterials Institute – a leading biomedical research enterprise making advancements in smart medical devices to improve health care, create jobs and provide a strong economic engine for New York.
The Senator and Chancellor also talked about Syracuse’s efforts to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency on campus. The Senator also offered support for a collaborative effort Syracuse is spearheading to improve education for the entire Syracuse community.
