U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that the Sullivan County Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) will a receive a federal grant of $398,279 from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used for a number of projects, including developing a Behavioral Support Team that will be comprised of local experts who will work on addressing challenging behavioral issues in the classroom. This program is a new program for the Sullivan County BOCES and will be available to all component schools. Funding will also be used to train staff and aid schools in updating their methods and practices for addressing classroom behaviors.
“Every student learns differently and many students have unique needs,” said Senator Schumer. “This funding provides our educators and administrators with the resources they need to make sure students are focused and learning in the classroom, and getting the support they need. Making sure our students receive the best education possible will always be a top priority of mine and I will continue to fight to bring innovative educational programs to Sullivan County.”
“Every student in New York deserves to get a quality education,” Senator Gillibrand said. “Providing students with more behavioral resources and support will help them focus and learn during the school day. These federal investments in the Sullivan County Board of Cooperative Education Services will help bridge the gap for students and help them reach their full potential.”
“We thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for their support for this funding. This is a much needed addition to the programs and services of Sullivan County,” said Dr. Debra Fuchs-Nadeau, Director of Clinical and Specialized Services at Sullivan County Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Elementary and Secondary School Counseling (ESCC) Programs. ESCC is authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and is administered by the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS). The goal of this program is to provide support to local educational agencies and to establish or expand elementary and secondary school counseling programs.
